DESIGN BRIEF
My desire was to create a lighthearted and comedic art project pamphlet that explores the unconventional skill of handling Mariah Carey's omnipresence during the Christmas holiday season. I developed a unique and humorous take on teaching by infusing comedy into the project.
RESEARCH & INSPIRATION
I drew inspiration from the captivating and whimsical art style of Mary Blair, renowned for her childlike imagery and vibrant use of color. This artistic approach resonated deeply with the Christmas theme. Blair's exaggerated and colorful art style seamlessly harmonizes with the joyous and extravagant holiday lifestyle associated with Mariah Carey, offering a delightful and enchanting visual experience.
CHARACTER DESIGN
The character design of my project is carefully crafted to harmonize seamlessly with the colorful and playful style reminiscent of Mary Blair's iconic art. The children characters are intentionally depicted with basic shapes, emphasizing their innocence and embodying the childlike charm that defines Blair's work. In contrast, Mariah Carey's character design, while still playful, features more intricate detailing and curvaceous lines, reflecting her glamorous and larger-than-life persona during the Christmas season. This intentional juxtaposition adds depth to the visual narrative, celebrating both the enchanting world of childhood wonder and the extravagance of the holiday festivities led by the Queen of Christmas herself.
SKETCHES
I began by meticulously outlining the content for each step of the pamphlet, mapping out the humorous scenarios to tackle Mariah Carey's Christmas domination. To visually integrate the steps and images, I sketched dynamic compositions where the characters interacted with their surroundings, harmonizing playful elements of both Blair's approach and the holiday theme. By intertwining the essence of each step with whimsical visuals, I ensured a seamless connection between instruction and entertainment. I then translated the character sketches into digital format, preserving their endearing simplicity while enhancing their expressiveness.
